The Letter of Understanding is designed to promote dialogue between the supervisor(s) and the student, in order to define expectations and to increase awareness of the rights and responsibilities governing the training program and the student-supervisor relationship. The student will have ongoing contact with both the supervisor and the mentor throughout his/her graduate studies and should be familiar with their roles and responsibilities. The student will meet with his/her mentor on a yearly basis.
The Mentor will be a member of the student’s advisory committee. Each graduate student, in addition to having a Supervisor, will be assigned a Mentor. Prior to being accepted into the program, students should have a supervisor who has competence in the proposed area of research. Students will leave this workshop with a far more sophisticated understanding of the issues, and it is a great opportunity to network! The event is very relevant to Master's students and first- or second-year PhD students who may not understand the complexity of the student/supervisor relationship, authorship, and plagiarism.Īlthough plagiarism is brought to students' attention in many ways, this half-day interactive workshop builds on that information and is an excellent opportunity for students to discuss and understand some of the complexities that are not easily accessed in handbooks, policies, and guidelines.
